FAQ

Q:  We are interested in trying out out for the select team, but don’t really understand what that means. Can you direct or help me?

A:  A “select” team is just as it sounds.  It is a carefully selected group of boys that are able to demonstrate that their lacrosse abilities would be an asset to a competitive tournament team.  In addition to their lacrosse and athletic abilities, Coach Mott will require that the boys remain solid academically and also serve within their community.  We are shooting for well-rounded young men with a passion for the game of lacrosse.

Q:  My son intends to try out for his high school team (Hough).  So, I guess my question really is, since it says the select team will not interfere with school, wouldn’t it make sense to put a team together of Hough students so they can continue to play together?

A: I understand exactly what you are saying about the kids playing together continuously from season to season.  Without a doubt, the more the boys play together, the stronger they become as a unit on the field (not to mention off, which is a fabulous by-product of the game).

The answer to your question becomes a little convoluted by the many different school choices we have, as well as the different lacrosse choices in our area.  While it makes sense for the boys to play together year round, the many different schools that our boys all attend makes this nearly impossible.

At a recreational level, it is ideal that boys from school teams remain together as long as the numbers are present, and they are growing and being challenged as individuals.  At the select level, we will face teams that are highly competitive.  The teams we oppose often are made up of a few of the very best players from each club in a region.  We will do our best to face those challenging teams with the best of our area as well, regardless of the school that they attend.

I do want to stress, though, that I wholeheartedly believe that Xtreme Lacrosse is the perfect place for kids to take their level of play from beginner to contender.  My sons are my personal testimony to Coach Mott’s abilities in that area.  As a result, I expect to see many boys doing a lot of hard work on their lacrosse game between the initial tryout in September, and the final tryout in December.

Q: If you knew your son was going to try out for spring lax, would you still have them even try a “select” team?  Or is there too much cross over and too much in the event he made the school team?

A: I absolutely, positively WILL encourage my son to try out for both Select and the school team.

Reasons:

1.  Coach Mott absolutely and completely supports these boys all being committed to their school teams as their FIRST priority.

2.  There will be conflicts where our boys will have to choose their commitment to Hough lacrosse as their first priority.  They will be missing lacrosse practice to play lacrosse…I think I can comfortably speak for Coach Mott and say that’s no problem.

3.  We LOVE travel/select lacrosse!  It is a big commitment, but it is the ‘pinnacle’ of what the boys work toward.  They get to face teams from other areas, travel together with friends that they grow to love as brothers, and glow from the pride and hard work involved in having been chosen to play at that level.
